Biography: Arie de Geus worked for the Royal Dutch/Shell Group for 38 years, from 1951 to 1989, one three continents. In 1978 he returned to the United Kingdom to assume regional responsibility for Shell's businesses in Africa and South Asia. In 1981 he headed Group Planning, which did pioneering work in scenario planning, in the nature and decision-making processes of large corporations, and in the management of change. From 1981 to 1998 de Geus was also chairman of the Netherlands-British Chamber of Commerce. The Queen of The Netherlands appointed him an officer in the Order of Oranje-Nassau in 1988. He is a founding member of the Global Business Network.
Since his retirement, he has advised many government and private institutions and has lectured throughout the world, as well as accepting appointments as visiting fellow at London Business School and as a board member of both the Centre for Organizational Learning at MIT and the Nijenrode Learning Center in The Netherlands.
Mr. de Geus's publications include an influential article entitled "Planning as Learning" in the
Harvard Business Review (1988) and a lecture entitled "Companies, What Are They?" published by the Royal Society of Arts, London (1995).
